The Welsh Eye Care Initiative

The Eye Health Examination Wales is a Welsh Assembly funded initiative that gives the general public access to more in-depth eye assessments.

This is available to the following groups:

1. Uniocular patients, i.e., patients who would be significantly handicapped if they lost vision in their better eye.
2. Patients who are profoundly deaf.
3. Patients with retinitis pigmentosa, or siblings of patients with inherited eye disease.
4. Patients of Black African, Black Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin.
5. Patients with a family history of glaucoma.
6. Any patient presenting with acute symptoms requiring attention.
7. Patients who are registered blind or partially-sighted.

The patient can self-refer or may be referred by their general practitioner. They may also be referred to us under the PEARS scheme.

OCT (Ocular Coherence Topography) eye screening

What is an OCT?

An OCT scan enables us to view the health of your eyes in greater detail, by allowing us to see what is going on behind the eye that we cannot see when your optician looks into your eye.

We are able to look at the structures and get a clearer idea of eye health.

Nothing is more important than the health and well-being of your child, and you may have noticed your child struggling to see clearly at a distance. Your child may have myopia, also called short-sightedness. If left untreated in children, myopia can lead to significant and lasting vision problems in the future.

Today, in most cases, myopia is corrected with standard single vision spectacle lenses, providing clear and sharp vision. However, single vision spectacle lenses do not help to manage myopia by slowing down myopia progression. When myopia increases by 1 diopter, there is a 58% increased risk of future eye-related disease.
